Trial by gas set me on fire

Today was my first full shift on my own. This week I had been working with other people, watching them and basically helping out. Today I got to the gas station around 3.30 and the woman I was reliving said,"thank god you're here, I gotta go," didn't explain to me anything about what I had to do at the beginning of my shift, what all hose papers she left lying around were, and who's coffee was that?

So get in, I'm alone, there are customers waiting to be paid, someone is there to pick up their car that's been serviced and two of the pumps are dead. Also every time I try to plug numbers into the cash register gives me the wrong amount. I don't know what I'm doing, the rest of my hair is turning gray, and the one person who said he was going to help me was no where to be found. I called up my friend who had gotten me the job there and said if they didn't get back soon I was going to walkout and I didn't give a fuck what happened. Eventually everything got sorted out. My shift ran smoothly, I ate a lot of carbs and told off a few Russians. I realized that people by nature are an not generally bad, they're just stupid. how else to you explain handing me a hundred dollar bill and then saying "just give me five dollars gas," I should have given his change to him in singles. Then there's the fact that as I'm doing ten things at once there are about five degenerates who work there who are just hanging around the snack shop watching me. Ugh.

the woman who's shift was after me came in ten minutes early to help me close out. I was so mixed up that what should have taken ten minutes took an hour and a half. Maybe I'm just not cut out to be a cashier. One of the guys that worked there saw I was close to tears and was nice enough to drive me home.

Hmm..when's my next shift?

  • Yikes!! That's a pretty horrifying first day of a new job! Sounds like you handled it well though. I'm sure it will get better. I always want to quit my first day of any new job. Hang in there...just think about all of the beers & donuts you'll be able to buy with the extra cash!

  • Better than "Trial by fire gave me gas." :p

My job has been crazy too. Since a coworker suddenly died from a tumor, I have been given the task of doing her job. My day now consists of covering a frantic help line and contacting people around the country, telling them the other woman is dead and asking what she did for them and how do I duplicate her efforts.
